Here is an example of a exterior ramp which has both handrails and guardrails. Why? Although the industry standard only requires handrails along the running length of handicap ramps, this design went above and beyond with protective guardrails as well.
While handrails provide users of the ramp the ability to maintain their balance, the guardrails prevent people on the upper level sidewalk from falling onto the ramp or parking lot.
