Ralph Nader and Ruiss discuss the National Floor Safety Institutes (NFSI) recent petition to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission calling for mandatory slip resistance testing and labeling of floor coverings, floor cleaners, and footwear.

Same level slips and falls are the leading cause of preventable injury and death costing an estimated $150 billion each year. NFSI research reveals that approximately 75% of all slips and falls are caused by unsafe flooring, floor maintenance, and footwear. However, none of these industries provide any information to the consumer which they can use to make better buying decisions. Sadly for may they only realize that their floors or shoe soles were dangerous after they experience a serious fall.

Unfortunately the flooring industry vehemently opposes testing and labeling of their products only to expose the public to unnecessary risk. And both the chemical floor cleaning and footwear industries have remained on the sideline and do not do their part to improve edestrain safety.
